Making Every Day a Disney Day: Adding a touch of Disney to your garden

By Kristina Brandt

With the Walt Disney World Flower and Garden Festival continuing in Epcot until May 17, 2015, parks guests can experience extra Disney magic by wandering through character-inspired topiaries and beautiful landscapes. But did you know you don’t have to be a horticulture expert to bring Disney magic to your own garden? Now that Spring is here it’s the perfect opportunity to get your garden ready with some inspiration from your favorite Disney characters. All it takes is some creativity and a willingness to get your hands dirty. Continue after the page break to find out more about adding a touch of Disney to your garden…

First, decide how you’d like your garden set up. Is it a vegetable garden or a flower garden? Will you have both? Once you know what type of garden you’re planning, decide what Disney theme you’d like to incorporate. It can be based on one character, one movie, or be a combination of many. You can even use the Flower and Garden Festival as inspiration. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Vegetable Garden:

  • Rabbit’s Garden– Using inspiration from Winnie the Pooh’s Rabbit, create a simple square or rectangular plot and choose with veggies you’d like to plant. When planting the seeds, label each crop with a simple square paper or stock board on a stick. Use Rabbit’s spelling of the vegetables such as “Kerits” and “Cabege” as labels and create a sign with either Rabbit’s name or your name (misspellings optional) to let all Tiggers know whose garden it really is.

  • The Land’s Garden– For those who don’t have the space to plant a garden, or perhaps don’t have backyard, taking inspiration from Epcot’s The Land can be a great alternative. While being able to build a large multi-room greenhouse complete with a calming boat ride probably isn’t in your budget, there are cost-effective ways to copy the methods used. Look into purchasing hanging vegetable planters or hanging baskets. Things like tomatoes, peas, beans, eggplant, and other foods that grow on vines can be planted this way. Do your research and see how you can fit what you’d like to grow in your space and how your method of caring for these crops will differ.

Flower Garden:

    • Mickey Mouse Garden– If the idea of making a simple geometric shape for your flower garden bores you, consider changing it up this year by taking inspiration from your favorite Disney character, Mickey Mouse. By shaping your garden to look like the Mickey silhouette, you still have the option of planting whatever flowers you want while still adding a touch of Disney magic. You can also do the same for other characters with a simple silhouette like Minnie and Donald.

      • Movie Flower Garden– Flowers have often been used in Disney movies that you can incorporate into your own garden. How you pick them is up to you, but it can be fun to select the types of flowers you plant based on your favorite Disney movies. What you can actually plant will also depend upon where you live, but looking to films like “Beauty and the Beast,” “Aladdin,” “Tangled,” “Alice in Wonderland,” or even the new “Tinker Belle” movies are great places to start. You can also go an even simpler route and choose flowers based off of character color combinations you like. Being inspired by a Disney character doesn’t mean it has to look like one exactly.

With everything planted and in place, you can add the finishing touches with some Disney gardening décor. Your local Walmart or Kmart will often have small, affordable Disney character statues such as Pooh, Mickey, Minnie, or even Grumpy to add to your garden. Ebay also offers a selection of rare and discontinued statues that can be purchased from previous owners. For a touch of musical whimsy, take a look at the Disney wind chimes that you can purchase in the Amazon link below:

Whatever direction you choose to go in, make your garden your own and be sure to keep it healthy and strong. By planning now, you’ll have a wonderful Disney garden that will grow and change with you throughout the year.

Making Every Day a Disney Day: Marvel’s Ultimate Movie Marathon

        By Kristina Brandt

The Disney parks aren’t the only place you can find heroes from the stories we all know and love. Especially if you’re looking for superheroes. With Marvel’s newest movie “Avengers: Age of Ultron” set to hit theaters May 1, movie theaters across the country are getting ready for the franchise’s biggest event yet, the Marvel Ultimate Movie Marathon. Learn more about this “super” event after the page break…

When the first “Avengers” film hit theaters in 2012, select movie theater chains ran a 6-movie marathon showcasing the previous five Marvel movies and finishing it off with the new release. Now with the second “Avengers” film approaching, theaters are preparing to run another marathon, this time playing all 11 Marvel movies in an approximately 27-hour time period.

The Marvel Ultimate Movie Marathon will take place on April 29 at select AMC and Regal theaters across the country, including the AMC Downtown Disney 12 in Anaheim, Cali. and the AMC Downtown Disney 24 in Orlando, Fla.

AMC has already released its movie schedule for the event as follows starting April 29:

        6:00pm- Iron Man
        8:25pm- The Incredible Hulk
        10:35pm- Iron Man 2
        1:00am- Thor
3:10am- Captain America: The First Avenger
        5:30am- The Avengers
        8:48am- Iron Man 3
        11:15am- Thor: The Dark World
1:45pm- Captain America: The Winter Soldier
        4:20pm- Guardians of the Galaxy
        7:00pm- Avengers: Age of Ultron

Currently, only select theaters will be hosting the ultimate marathon, but more details will be announced as the date approaches. Visit AMC’s and Regal’s websites for details.
At $70 per ticket, the event averages to less than $6.50 per movie. Included in the purchase of each Marvel Ultimate Movie Marathon ticket is a collectable Avengers medallion that will be distributed at the end of the final movie. AMC is also offering a collector’s pin to ticket holders and those who are members of their AMC Stubs rewards program will receive $10 in Bonus Bucks to spend at the concession stand during that event.

As with other movie marathons, there will be breaks in between for snacks and bathroom breaks.
For those looking to get their Marvel marathon fix, but may not have the time, or patience, to sit in a movie theater for over 27 hours, select theaters are also playing an Avengers Double Feature on April 30. The more manageable 2-movie event will play the first “Avengers” at 4pm, followed by the new “Avengers: Age of Ultron.”

Of course, if you’re just looking to see the new film, tickets are already on sale for “Avengers: Age of Ultron” in its regular format, 3D, and IMAX 3D where available. While the official release date is May 1, some theaters like AMC offer shows starting the day before as early as 7pm. You can visit their website to find your local theater.

The Walt Disney Company purchased Marvel Entertainment in late 2009 and has played a big role in the films’ distribution, marketing, and merchandising. You can currently find Marvel products in your local Disney Store or online at DisneyStore.com. The franchise was also incorporated onto Disney Cruise Line ships and into the runDisney program in 2014.

With a third version of the “Avengers: Age of Ultron” trailer recently released, Disney fans and Marvel fans alike are anxiously awaiting their chance to assemble for this year’s film.

You don’t have to be at the parks in order to get your daily dose of Disney. No matter where you live, you can incorporate the magic of Disney into your everyday routine to make the ordinary into a fairytale experience. One way to achieve that, is to look the part thanks to Lauren Conrad’s new Cinderella collection which can be found at your local Kohl’s stores and online right now. Join me after the page break for more on this beautiful collection…

Fashion designer and big time Disney fan Lauren Conrad recently collaborated with Disney to create a 24-piece collection of shirts, skirts, dresses and shoes all inspired by the Disney classic movie “Cinderella.” Using the 1950s movie for inspiration, the collection consists of light spring colors with blues and pinks playing a dominant role. Using fabrics like chiffon, organza and tulle, the collection flows together to create a fairy tale feel that Cinderella herself would be proud to wear.
Arriving on shelves in Kohl’s stores and on their website in Feb. 22, 2015, Cinderella by LC Lauren Conrad for Kohl’s has already received positive reviews amongst fashion critics and shoppers alike. Besides being featured on InStyle.com, Conrad also shares her personal favorites on her website LaurenConrad.com.

As the collection is offered through Kohl’s, shoppers will find the Cinderella-inspired pieces to follow along the department store’s price range, with Kohl’s card members receiving an additional discount during special offers. Check Kohls.com or your local store for specific pricing information.

Conrad’s collection arrives just in time for the new live action version of Disney’s Cinderella, set to hit theaters March 13, 2015.

Juniors looking to take home some Cinderella-inspired gear also have their own collection by Disney which includes skirts, tops, and dresses. While these are not a part of the Lauren Conrad collection, they are still from the Disney line and were inspired by the new live action Cinderella movie.

Fans of Conrad’s work and the Disney films can look forward to more Conrad/Disney collaborations as the fashion designer is working on another Disney-inspired collection. While the movie this collection is centered around hasn’t been made public yet, we can expect to see the new designs on shelves around May 2015.
